Shocking Brain Tumor Discovery

In late October 2022, Isabella Strahan was starting her freshman year at University of Southern California when she began experiencing concerning symptoms like headaches, nausea, and loss of balance. At first she thought it may be vertigo, but on October 25th she woke up violently ill and vomiting blood. Her family urged her to get examined right away.

After a full MRI scan at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, doctors discovered a fast-growing, 4 centimeter tumor in the back of Isabella’s brain known as medulloblastoma. This type of tumor starts in the cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls balance and coordination. Though common in children, medulloblastoma is rare in older teens Isabella’s age.

Upon hearing the devastating news, Michael Strahan immediately flew from New York City to Los Angeles to be by his daughter’s side. On October 27th, the day before her 19th birthday, Isabella underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumor.

Beginning Her Cancer Treatment Journey

After the successful surgery, Isabella spent a month rehabilitating and regaining her ability to walk. Her twin sister Sophia remained closely involved, supporting Isabella every step of the way. Though the initial tumor was removed, Isabella faced additional treatments to ensure no cancerous cells remained.

She completed 30 radiation therapy sessions over 6 weeks, ringing the bell to celebrate the milestone. Up next is chemotherapy starting in February at Duke Children’s Hospital near where she lives in North Carolina. Though the months ahead will be difficult, Isabella feels ready to tackle the treatments and get back to normal life.

I’m very excited for this whole process to wrap. But you just have to keep living every day, I think, through the whole thing,” she said. Her inspiring strength and optimism in facing cancer at such a young age is remarkable.

Drawing Strength From Family and Helping Others

Isabella has drawn tremendous strength from her tight-knit family during her health challenges. Her father Michael took time off Good Morning America to be by her side for surgery and treatment. He calls Isabella the “luckiest man in the world” to have such an amazing daughter.

Michael confessed the experience revealed vulnerabilities and changed his outlook on what really matters. “It’s really made me change my perspective on so many things in my life,” he shared. Having faced many tests as a football player and television personality, this was the ultimate challenge.

The Strahan family has received an outpouring of love and support from friends like Michael’s GMA co-hosts Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos. Isabella is now paying that kindness forward by openly sharing her story and helping others facing cancer diagnoses.

She plans to document her journey publicly to support Duke Children’s Hospital. “I hope to just kind of be a voice, and be [someone] who maybe [those who] are going through chemotherapy or radiation can look at,” Isabella explained.

Though incredibly difficult, the brain tumor battle has given 19-year-old Isabella Strahan an invaluable new perspective on life. “Perspective is a big thing. I’m grateful. I am grateful just to walk or see friends or do something, ’cause when you can’t do something, it really impacts you,” she reflected.

After months confined to hospital beds and treatment centers, the chance to experience simple joys like walking outdoors or laughing with friends means everything. Isabella won’t take those things for granted anymore after realizing how quickly life can change.

By bravely sharing her personal journey with the public, Isabella hopes to uplift and inspire other young people facing serious illnesses. Her positivity and strength despite such frightening health challenges at a young age is remarkable. She’s become a role model for how to handle adversity with grace and courage.

Isabella still has difficult treatments ahead in her fight against cancer. But with the loving support of her friends and family, plus her commendable determination and outlook, she has given hope to countless others confronting major life battles. Her inspiring story proves the human spirit can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.
