Lisa Bonet has initiated formal divorce proceedings from Jason Momoa, marking the end of their 20-year relationship.
This development comes nearly two years after the couple, who have been married for 5 years and share two children, announced their separation, citing irreconcilable differences as the cause for their split. This event is encapsulated in the headline, “Lisa Bonet Files for Divorce from Jason Momoa After Nearly 20 Years Together.“
Bonet, 54, filed the divorce petition on Monday, January 9th, 2024 in Los Angeles County Superior Court.
According to the divorce documents obtained by media outlets, Bonet and Momoa will have joint legal and physical custody of their two kids – 15-year-old son Nakoa-Wolf and 16-year-old daughter Lola.
The documents also revealed that the former couple have already reached a private agreement regarding the division of their assets and neither will receive spousal support.
Bonet and Momoa first met back in 2005 and started dating shortly after. They eventually tied the knot in October 2017. However, the divorce petition lists their date of separation as October 2020 – over a year before they publicly announced their breakup. This means their marriage lasted just over 5 years.
In January 2022, Bonet and Momoa released a joint statement announcing their separation after nearly 20 years together. “We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times…A revolution is unfolding and our family is of no exception…feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring,” read their statement released on Instagram. “And so we share our Family news that we are parting ways in marriage.“
Despite the split, the former couple emphasized that their love for one another remains. “The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other to be who we are learning to become…” continued their statement, which was signed off: “May Love Prevail.“
Bonet Was Married Once Before
The divorce filing marks the end of Momoa’s first marriage. However, this is actually Bonet’s second time being divorced.
The actress was famously married to rockstar Lenny Kravitz from 1987 to 1993. Their daughter, Zoë Kravitz, was born in 1988. Zoë has followed in her parents’ footsteps with a successful acting career and is set to play Catwoman in the upcoming film The Batman. She also recently got engaged to Magic Mike star Channing Tatum.
Despite having divorced decades ago, Bonet and Kravitz remained very close friends and amicably coparented Zoë.
Momoa Developed Close Bond with Bonet’s Kids
After coupling up with Bonet in the mid-2000s, Momoa developed a strong fatherly bond with both Zoë and Lenny.
In a 2017 interview with People Magazine, Momoa said he and Lenny Kravitz were “literally” best friends. “Zoë’s my daughter, and when my daughter’s happy, I’m happy,” stated Momoa.
He also commented on becoming a stepdad to Zoë: “I helped raise Zoë, so I’m papa bear.“
Over the years, Momoa was often seen spending time with both Bonet’s kids, even attending their events and celebrations together.
It appears Momoa will have a similar amicable relationship with his soon-to-be ex-wife Bonet. They seem committed to successfully coparenting their two kids – just as Bonet did with ex Lenny Kravitz.
Bonet and Momoa Kept Things Low-Key
Despite their Hollywood careers, Bonet and Momoa generally kept a low profile and lived a relatively private life during their relationship.
They made their debut as a couple on the red carpet at the premiere of Momoa’s film Road to Paloma in 2014. After that, they made limited public appearances together.
The stars were based primarily in Topanga, California – worlds away from the hustle of Hollywood. They enjoyed a quiet life focused on family time, nature, and simple living.
In a 2020 interview with Men’s Health Magazine, Momoa described the family’s tranquil retreat in Topanga: “It’s just one giant oak, and it’s just amazing…You can’t see anybody. Your heart rate just slows down.“
That simplistic lifestyle remains a priority as they move forward with divorce and coparenting duties. A source told Hollywood Life that Bonet and Momoa “are still committed to being friends for their kids’ sakes and for each other.“
Momoa’s Career Reached New Heights During Marriage
While Momoa and Bonet kept their romantic relationship low-profile, the Aquaman star’s acting career took off to new heights during their marriage.
Momoa landed his breakout role as Khal Drogo on the HBO series Game of Thrones in 2011, early on in his relationship with Bonet. A few years later in 2016, Momoa gained more mainstream fame after being cast as Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe – first appearing as the hero in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The success of 2017’s Justice League then set the stage for his Aquaman solo movie, released in late 2018. Aquaman grossed over $1 billion worldwide and cemented Momoa as a bonafide A-lister.
He reprised his superhero role in 2022’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Off-screen, Momoa also enjoyed lucrative endorsement deals with brands like Apple TV+ and Corona.
As Momoa’s star power grew, he still remained devoted to Bonet and their family. He often publicly declared his love for his longtime partner during interviews and on social media.
Bonet, meanwhile, had largely stepped back from acting – with her last on-screen role being on Ray Donovan in 2013. Rather than seek out fame and fortune, the once-famous actress seemed content with the quiet life in Topanga alongside Momoa.
What’s Next Following the Divorce?
While Bonet and Momoa’s paths clearly diverged, insiders suggest it was amicable life changes – not conflict – that led to the demise of their marriage. A source told People Magazine: “They have grown apart because of different focuses.“
With the divorce underway, sources close to the former couple report both Momoa and Bonet remain committed to peaceful coparenting and maintaining a friendship.
An insider revealed to Hollywood Life that Bonet and Momoa “have both been focused on their children still enjoying family time together as a unit.” The source continued: “They will continue to be involved in each other’s lives since they have their children.“
It appears Momoa and Bonet are primed to follow the model of her successful coparenting dynamic with ex Lenny Kravitz. Despite parting ways romantically, they have an unwavering bond built on family.
In their joint separation statement from 2022, Momoa and Bonet said: “Our devotion unwavering to this sacred life…Teaching our children what’s possible…May Love Prevail ✨“
Those loving intentions will surely carry through this next chapter as they transition to a platonic friendship. Their devotion as parents continues to come first.
