Prince Harry’s latest public jabs at U.S. President Donald Trump have reignited speculation that the Duke of Sussex could face renewed scrutiny over his future in America, with insiders suggesting the royal exile may even be courting deportation as a way out of his troubled California life.
The controversy flared after Harry appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he joked, “I heard you elected a king,” referencing accusations that Trump harbors authoritarian ambitions. The remark was widely interpreted as a dig at the president and quickly fueled rumors of a deepening feud between the two.
Harry, who stepped back from royal duties in June 2020 and relocated to California with his wife Meghan Markle, continued his playful provocation during the same appearance. “Next year, I know we are looking forward to welcoming more Brits from across the pond,” he said, adding pointedly, “Provided they behave, and if they make it through customs, and pass ICE.”
While the comments were delivered with humor, royal insiders believe there may be a calculated motive behind them. Royal expert Hilary Fordwich suggested that Harry could be intentionally “pushing Trump’s buttons” in hopes of being deported back to the United Kingdom. “If Harry’s home life is as unpleasant as we’ve seen, this may be a deliberate attempt to get deported. It’s entirely possible,” she said.
Speculation about Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle has intensified alongside the political drama. Observers have noted that the couple increasingly appear to be living separate lives, pursuing different priorities. Markle has focused on rebuilding her personal brand, including her lifestyle venture As Ever and a struggling Netflix series, With Love, Meghan. She has also returned to social media, frequently sharing images of their children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4.
Harry, by contrast, has publicly expressed discomfort with posting children online. Speaking on the Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know podcast, he warned parents to be “really, really worried, concerned, and cautious” about sharing photos of kids on social platforms, citing online safety concerns.
A source previously claimed the Sussexes endure “constant drama” but have “learned to function within the chaos.” Now, however, palace insiders say the strain may be reaching a breaking point. According to one source, Harry, King Charles, the U.K. Home Office, and the Royal and VIP Executive Committee are reportedly conducting a fresh security risk assessment—potentially opening the door for Harry to return to Britain with his children.
“He’s secretly begging his father to take him back,” a palace insider alleged. “And then the question becomes, what’s Meghan to do? She’s spiraling.”
Earlier this year, Trump appeared to dismiss the idea of deporting Harry, quipping that the prince already had “enough problems with his wife,” whom he bluntly described as “terrible.” But insiders now believe Harry may want the president to “do his worst” if it means an escape from what they describe as Markle’s “diva” behavior.
Adding to the uncertainty are past accusations surrounding Harry’s U.S. visa application. The conservative Heritage Foundation previously filed a lawsuit seeking the release of his immigration records, alleging he may have lied about past drug use. The Department of Homeland Security, however, has stated that Harry’s application complied with all “applicable rules and regulations.”
For now, Prince Harry remains in the United States—but between pointed political jokes, marital rumors, and renewed security discussions with the palace, questions about how long he will stay, and where he ultimately belongs, are growing louder.
